Trip to Maine

PROPOSED WEEDERS TRIP TO MAINE — JULY 2019

Four days of garden visiting, gorgeous scenery, delicious local food, art and design, learning about Maine conservation and economic issues and meeting classic Mainers.  Pre-trip and post-trip options round out nearly a week.  Weeders would be responsible for their transportation to Maine, some meals and the pre-trip. Your CMC (Coastal Maine Committee) would arrange for shuttle buses, overnight accommodations, most lunches and some dinners, admission fees, lectures and discussions with professionals.


OPTIONAL PRE-TRIP

 

Arrive Portland: hotel on your own; suggested visits to Winslow Homer’s home and studio in Prout’s Neck and other private gardens; Portland Art Museum, shopping and restaurants on your own.
 

FOUR DAY TRIP

 

Day One — Sun. July 14

Leave Portland 9:00 am by shuttle/bus; 

10:15  Arrive Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens: guided tour by Executive Director Bill Cullina, lunch in cafe, explore gardens on your own,  garden shop

3:00 Shuttle/bus leaves for Cushing

4:00 arrive Cushing; get settled in rooms (at Sally’s, Nancy’s, neighboring cottages; freshen up

5:00 talk on lobstering by Danny Staples on his dock 

6:00 cocktails in Bob Garcia’s garden
7:00 Dinner on Sally’s dock (or in barn loft)


Day Two — Mon. July 15

8:00 Breakfast on Nancy’s dock

9-00 Shuttle bus leaves:

9:30 10:30 Drew & Peter’s garden  (Peter is past curator of Peggy Rockefeller Rose Gdn, NY Botanical Gdn)

10:30 - 11:30 Katherine Cobey’s studio (amazing fiber artist)

11:45 - 12:45 Olson House (site of Andrew Wyeth’s painting ‘Christina’s World’ and many others) 

12:45  Shuttle bus leaves for Rockland
lunch t.b.d. 

Check into Berry Inn or Limerick Inn; freshen up 

Walk to The Farnsworth (gem of an art museum featuring American artists in Maine, especially the Wyeth’s) 

3:30-7:30 windjammer dinner cruise

 

Day Three — Tues. July 16

8:00 breakfast at your inn

9:00 Island Institute: informative talk about coastal communities and their problems of sustainability; q & a.

shopping at Archipelago,

Lunch at McClune’s (classic waterside lobster shack)

Len Greenhaghl’s quarry garden

Avena Botanicals — talk by Deb Soule about growing and producing herbal products, tour of her garden

6:00 celebration dinner at Cafe Miranda. 

 

Day Four — Wed. July 17

8 - 9:00 breakfast, checkout

Shuttle returns to Portland Airport, with possible stops on the way at Spindleworks in Brunswick, Halcyon Yarns and/or Maine Maritime Museum in Bath

 

 

OPTIONAL POST-TRIP EXTENSION  

 

Day Four continued  

Northport:  Swan’s Island Blanket Co.

Belfast:  Chase Family farm

lunch at Chase’s Daily (family restaurant)

Blue Hill: tour of Four Seasons Farm, talk by Eliot Coleman, founder of the organic gardening movement

Northeast Harbor

check into hotel; dinner on your own

 

Day Five — Thurs. July 18

8-9:00 breakfast; check-out

garden visits:

9-10:00 Thuja Gardens

10-12:00 Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden; lunch t.b.d.

1:30-4:00 private garden of Curt Strohacker and Lelah; other private gardens t.b.d.

Dinner t.b.d.  


 

Day Six — Fri. July 19 Breakfast, checkout  

9:00 Shuttle leaves for Cadillac Mt., “Blow Hole”  

10:30 Return to Portland Airport; box lunch on the shuttle; stop at Spindleworks
